Boehringer, an international drug manufacturer, has had a number of lawsuits pile up due to excessive bleeding alleged caused by its medication Pradaxa, according to Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Suits have been filed in federal courts across the United States but have recently been consolidated by U.S. District Judge David Herndon.

The first case will be heard in March 2014, said Tor Hoerman, a Chicago lawyer with inside knowledge on the suits. The drugmaker will be undergoing as many as 4,000 accusations due to its allegedly malfunctioning pill.

"The federal judge overseeing these cases understands the need for an early trial, so he has put us on a fast track," Hoerman told the source. "That may help us get a quicker resolution of claims that this drug harmed people."

Boehringer's spokespeople, however, have said that they have made stricter warnings and advisements regarding Pradaxa's bleeding risks, specifically explaining that patients 75 years or older with kidney problems should not take the medication. Also, the European Medicines Agency has stated that the medication's benefits in reducing stroke outweighs the chances of bleeding excessively.

Carl Tobias, professor of product-liability law at the University of Richmond in Virginia, said that this company is likely to choose a global settlement instead of taking the case through the U.S. legal system, as foreign companies are not as comfortable with such scenarios.

Businesses in Arizona should make sure they comply with all state and federal regulations regarding consumer safety as well as keep their employees protected from any harm.

Arizona companies that need assistance with consumer lawsuits should seek the representation of Phoenix business attorneys who have experience handling cases within any industry.
