Hot cup of tea and alleged burns led to a lawsuit against Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines has been implicated in a lawsuit by a consumer who was allegedly scalded by hot tea that a flight attendant served her, according to the Detroit Free Press. Angelica Keller, a 43-year-old construction worker, claimed she was served a cup of hot water without a place to put it down, causing her to spill her tea on her lap.
Keller and her attorney Rob Anderson filed an $800,000 negligence lawsuit against the airlines, claiming that the woman suffered second-degree burns and skin blisters. The company, however, claims that Keller chose the first row seat herself and was negligent when drinking her cup of tea, according to the United Press International.
This lawsuit is similar to previous incidents, such as the suit filed against McDonalds in 1992 after a woman spilled a hot cup of coffee on herself. Since then, these types of lawsuits became more common, causing many states around the country to take a number of measures preventing trivial lawsuits, as businesses lose millions of dollars per year on such cases.
"It's natural for people who think they know the facts of one case to hear another and draw a correlation," Tennessee attorney John Day told The Tennessean. "But the hot coffee case is often invoked to make people have doubts about the civil justice system."
Businesses in Arizona that encounter consumer complaints similar to the one Southwest Airlines is undergoing should consider speaking with Phoenix business attorneys who can offer the mediation and arbitration services necessary to keep a scandal out of the courtroom. An Arizona business lawyer with experience running a company can ensure that a business owner's needs are met within any legal dispute.
