4 tips for small businesses on TikTok

While TikTok started out as an app for teenagers lip syncing and dancing, it's grown into so much more than that. Now, it's downloaded onto phones far and wide and filled with, yes, teenagers dancing, but also doctors, comedians, businesses, and experts of every topic. If users are interested in something, the algorithm will eventually get it in front of them, making it a unique, effective marketing tool. In 2020, there were at least 65.9 million monthly active TikTok users in the United States, according to Statista.
Here are four ways for you to take advantage of the power of TikTok with your small business:
- Just get started! All you need is one creative idea to go viral. The best way to do so is to get to know the platform a bit. By scrolling through videos, you'll start to recognize different trends and sounds. If you can use one of those trends or sounds in relation to your business and make a video that might be interesting or funny, you may not be far from going viral.
- Engage with consumers. If you continue using TikTok, the algorithm will "get to know you," as mentioned before. It's likely you'll start seeing videos by users with similar interests, and perhaps similar businesses. The more you comment and engage with their videos, the more the algorithm will tailor your For You Page to see that kind of content. With a witty comment you may get some attention, so don't be shy.
- Target your audience with ads. Going viral isn't guaranteed organically, and if you want something you can bank on, you might consider paid ads. Similar to social media marketing concepts on other platforms, businesses on TikTok can pay to have a video play between user-generated content as people scroll. You can even target the demographic you're hoping to reach. And depending on the size of your business, there is also an option to pay for trending hashtag challenges, which show up on the Discover page.
- Harness the power of the influencer. Influencer marketing is popular now. You can pay someone who has a large following to show your product or service in a video. The cost varies depending on the influencer and their following, but it can be an effective way to get eyes on your business. In fact, Business Insider reports that influencer and other paid content will represent 20% of US agency and marketing professionals' digital ad budgets in 2021.
