What’s different about starting a business during a pandemic?

The US Census Bureau found that since 2007, 2020 has seen the largest spike in new business applications. While many small businesses are pushing through during the pandemic, starting a business looks a little different right now than it typically does. Read on for a few tips for success.
Type of business matters
The market that you're entering factors into success or failure. Looking to open a nightclub? Unfortunately, this wouldn't be successful right now. On the other hand, maybe you're trying to start your own cleaning company. This would be something much more practical.
During a pandemic, it's important to think about what people need. Don't enter an oversaturated market or one that is shut down right now. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce listed several examples of services that are doing well during COVID-19, including these two, just as an example:
- Delivery services (food delivery or grocery delivery are very successful right now, with many people unable to leave their homes.)
- Telehealth services (with many doctor's offices limiting their in-person visits, they turn to telehealth to be able to still conduct appointments with patients.)
Take advantage of social media and your digital presence
COVID-19 has jumpstarted our descent into a digital world. By taking advantage of this, you'll be able to more successfully reach your customers in a way that's helpful and impactful. Consider revamping your social media pages, or perhaps updating your website to make it more accessible for all users. Social media is a great place to update all of your customers on what's going on with your business —something that is especially helpful in a time of uncertainty.
Leverage your current skills
If you're starting a brand new business, Business Insider notes that it's important to use the skills that you already have to help make your business grow. Maybe you're really good at graphic design, but just as a hobby. Take advantage of that and use it to create posters and social media images for your business. Every talent that you have can be used to help your business thrive.
Overall, it's important to be aware of the difference of starting a business during a pandemic. Engage with your customers, take advantage of social media and more will help your business to thrive despite the times.
