Construction employment is returning to Arizona and elsewhere.

Construction hiring back in building mode in Arizona

The residential housing market is in the midst of a record shortfall, a problem fueled in part by continued demand for properties and not enough construction workers to replace what's purchased via development.

However, this frustrating situation appears to be on the mend in terms of employment, particularly in Arizona.

In September, 45 states and the District of Columbia saw an uptick in construction hiring, according to a newly released report from the Associated General Contractors of America. On the year, Arizona has produced the fifth most of them all, totaling 16,000 thus far. That's an increase of nearly 11 percent compared to the same period in 2017. Even more encouraging, the Grand Canyon State was third in construction job growth on a percentage basis, behind only Florida and Georgia, respectively.

AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson said the positive hiring trend is apparent far and wide, but in some states more than others.

"Construction activity is expanding nearly everywhere, as only three states experienced a decline in construction employment over the past year," Simonson explained. "These results show that contractors remain upbeat about demand for projects going forward."

Real estate – both in hiring and buying – represents a considerable portion of the nation's vibrant economy. But Arizona felt the fallout from the housing meltdown acutely, as Phoenix led the nation in industry job losses, according to the Arizona Republic. With more firms hiring, construction rivals statewide are vying over skilled laborers. Indeed, about 50 percent of respondents in the Valley area, according to the AGC poll, said they've lost workers to competitors who are also in hiring mode.

The construction industry is fast-paced, requiring employers to keep tabs on many moving pieces to remain afloat and stay competitive. The Law Offices of Donald W.
