Those who have recently purchased certain varieties of StarKist tuna could be eligible for either $25 in cash or $50 worth of tuna following the settlement of a fishy class action lawsuit. The suit alleged the food company was guilty of under-filling some of its five-ounce tuna cans. StarKist denies any wrongdoing.
Consumers are eligible for compensation if they bought any one of the four following varieties of tuna between February of 2009 and October of 2014: StarKist Chunk Light Tuna in Water, StarKist Solid White Tuna in Water, StarKist Chunk Light Tuna in Oil, and StarKist Solid White Tuna in Oil.
The plaintiff who first filed the suit, Patrick Hendricks, conducted independent testing on a large number of the cans in question. Shockingly enough, the results found that the StarKist cans sometimes contained as much as 17.3 percent less tuna than the minimum as mandated by the federal government for the advertised value. As part of the settlement, StarKist must pay up to $8 million in cash as well as $4 million in food vouchers, split among its consumers.
Just as they sometimes need legal protection when it comes to copyright infringements and unfair competition from rival companies, consumer facing businesses occasionally need to protect themselves from litigation filed by customers. If you're a business who is being wrongfully accused of malicious actions, it's important to contact a skilled business attorney as soon as possible. A lawyer can help protect your rights in case of litigation.
