Internationally popular French DJ David Guetta, known for his pop music collaborations, is facing a $6 million lawsuit for copyright infringement. 1980s artist Andre Dukek's complaint alleges that Guetta's hit song "Dangerous" is identical to his own song, "Illuminations" which he wrote in 1980 but failed to copyright until 2015.
Beyond profiting by millions of dollars from "Dangerous," Dudek also claims that Guetta gained multiple business opportunities, including one with T-Mobile, which led to the track being featured on one of the phone carrier's ads.
The singer of "Dangerous," Sam Martin, has also been named as a defendant in the case, as have Warner Music and Atlantic Records. While waiting for the case to go to trial, Dudek has demanded a court-ordered injunction to prevent the parties involved from further distributing and profiting from the track until the case has been resolved.
Guetta has yet to respond to the website, and multiple attempts by journalists to reach out to Atlantic Records for a statement have been met with silence. A verified version of "Illuminations" has also yet to turn up, making it impossible for those not involved in the lawsuit to determine whether or not Dudek's claims are legitimate.
"Dangerous" was released in October of 2014, and held the number one spot on several charts, including France, Spain, Germany, and the overall European charts.
If you believe someone is unfairly profiting off of your work without your permission, it's important to contact a skilled business attorney as soon as possible. A lawyer can help protect your rights in case of litigation, and get you just compensation.
