The possibility of patent infringement or an infringement lawsuit is a serious concern for technology companies. Many companies are developing similar products, and there is a great deal of competition in the industry. As such, there are opportunities for patent infringement cases to occur.
A recent case involves two companies that each created a technology for predictive texting. According to a VentureBeat article, SwiftKey and WordLogic are engaged in a patent infringement case.
WordLogic sued SwiftKey for infringement, claiming that SwiftKey is in violation of one of its patents by copying "many functional aspects and design features of WLC's predictive text technology," according to the suit, and that licensing negotiations that the company had been engaging in with SwiftKey had not worked out.
WordLogic explains in a press release that it holds numerous patents that it has worked to develop over a decade.
"We have made significant investments in developing WordLogic's technologies and patent portfolio and will work vigorously to protect our patent rights against infringement by others," said WordLogic CEO Frank Evanshen in a press release.
WordLogic believes its patents have been infringed upon and is taking legal action to resolve the issue, however, it may be up to the courts to decide whether infringement really took place.
When patent infringement occurs, it has the potential to result in significant losses for the company being infringed upon.
