What to know when searching for a patent attorney

If you own a small business, seeking out a patent attorney may not exactly be high on your list of priorities. But if you actually make new products that you seek to market, it is certainly an investment worth making.
Remember, if you think meeting with a lawyer is intimidating, try getting sued.
Entrepreneur contributor Stephen Key offers some tips for business owners who are new to working with lawyers.
First, use referrals. It should be obvious that if you know someone who has had a positive experience with a lawyer, you may want to try that lawyer for yourself. This is especially true if that lawyer specializes in a particular field, like intellectual property law.
When meeting with a law firm, be sure to give them as much information as you can about your patented product. This will help them represent you better. It also helps to learn about the legal process. You don't need to be an expert (that's what the lawyer is for) but a little background knowledge will help you ask better questions when you actually meet with an attorney.
In addition, don't be afraid to look outside your geographic location. If you can't find a lawyer nearby who meets your expectations, there are plenty elsewhere who will be willing to meet with you.
Finally, remember that you are the customer. Make sure you are clear about the exact service you are seeking from their firm.
Many businesses may wish to consider a Phoenix business attorney who has years of experience in the field of intellectual property and patent law.
