The beverage company Red Bull has recently been sued by a plaintiff that alleges the popular drink provides only as much energy as a cup of coffee. The claims state that deceptive marketing techniques – “Red Bull gives you wings!” – have been used to attract customers while charging a premium for unfounded reasons, Reuters reported on January 16.
“Defendants are able to charge and get a substantial premium for their products over readily available and much lower priced sources of caffeine that provide the same or substantially similar results,” the filed case stated.
Energy drinks have been under attack in recent months, as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has investigated five deaths that may attributable to the Monster energy beverage. Benjamin Careathers who lives in Bronx, New York filed the lawsuit against Red Bull on Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
The suit stated that a cup of Starbucks coffee would cost slightly less than a Red Bull energy drink but would include significantly more caffeine than the company claims. The plaintiff seeks that the energy beverage manufacturer stops advertising its drink as being able to provide benefits it does not have and correct any misconceptions that consumers may have.
