Four years ago, a plane crash in Buffalo, New York led to numerous lawsuits filed by families of the victims. After Continental Flight 3407 went down, wrongful death cases popped up in upstate New York, accusing the airlines of being responsible and not incorporating enough safety features. As of now, there are 11 plane crash lawsuits that haven't been settled, according to the Associated Press.
A Newark, New Jersey to Buffalo flight crashed into a home on February 9, 2009 and killed all 49 people onboard as well as a person residing in the house.
The lawyers representing the victims' families and the interests of the airlines said in a memo that as many as 29 settlements have been approved by both parties with two more pending approval. The overall settlement amounts have not been announced by either sides of the incident. The rest of the suits may be heading for trial if a settlement is not reached. The state Supreme Court will take part in deciding a handful of these cases.
A number of victims also perished in a plane crash on December 9, 2012 after traveling with singer Jenni Rivera throughout Mexico. Lawsuits have been filed by the families of the victims against Jenni Rivera Enterprises and a number of other businesses.
"We're looking into the possibility that someone within Jenni Rivera's company had something to do with choosing to rent that plane that was a piece of junk," Vance Owen, the plaintiff's counsel, told the Huffington Post.
