As previously reported in this blog, four sisters brought forth claims against the drug manufacturer Eli Lilly for its alleged connection to them being diagnosed with breast cancer. The suit accused the company of developing a drug for pregnant mothers that led to their children developing breast cancer later in life.
The Associated Press recently reported that Eli Lilly has reached a settlement with the plaintiffs. In total, 51 women filed lawsuits against other companies that were involved in the development of the drug DES. The Melnick sisters among the first to go to trial, though they were able to reach an agreement with the company before the its conclusion.
"When one settles a case, they recognize they can lose it," attorney Andrew Meyer, who specializes in medical malpractice cases, told the news source. "The reason they can lose it is because there's enough evidence for the plaintiffs to be able to win it. So it's not just optics, it isn't."
The exact terms of the settlement were not disclosed, according to The Huffington Post. In the past, the drug was prescribed to millions of pregnant women around the United States to prevent miscarriage or premature births. However, it was taken off the market after being linked with health problems.
Businesses following consumer protection laws avoid lawsuits
Companies in Arizona will have to follow consumer protection laws before marketing their products, and drug manufacturers are required to conduct numerous trials before submitting the medication for review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
With the help of Phoenix business attorneys, more firms in Arizona are able to avoid consumer lawsuits.
