Patent lawsuit filed against software developer

The flight simulation software developer Austin Meyer and his company Laminar Research have been implicated in a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Uniloc, a Luxembourg-based company, according to South Carolina-based publication The State.
Meyer had created X-plane flight simulation software for the aviation community, which has become increasingly popular in recent years. This may have influenced the likelihood of a patent lawsuit against the entrepreneur. The suit claims that Meyer was infringing on a patent by utilizing Android-based phone and tablet applications that need to be processed with a server when undergoing a license check.
However, the patent did not originate with Uniloc, which acquired it in 2012 and filed the lawsuit almost immediately afterward. The video game industry has been using this type of technology for the last 30 years and the patent itself was owned by a different software developer before the suit.
Last year, more than 2,000 companies have been involved in lawsuits related to intellectual property disputes. These cases have cost an accumulative $29 billion per year for businesses to defend. Litigation related to patents has significantly risen in recent years, said James Bessen of the Harvard School of Law.
"Patent law is extremely expensive," Bessen told the source. "In the space of a few years, things changed drastically. There's been an explosion of litigation."
Businesses in Arizona that develop a new product, technology or any work process will need to patent it and check to ensure that their creation was not patented previously. With patent lawsuits on the rise, it is necessary to use legal services before a lawsuit or dispute arises.
By working with experienced business attorneys in Phoenix, Arizona companies will be able to properly defend their patents and public image.
