The singing sensation Shakira is currently being sued by her ex-boyfriend Antonio de la Rua due to claims that she broke their contracted agreement and now owes him a substantial amount of money for "past and future partnership profits."
Entertainment Today reported that the plaintiff filed the lawsuit in New York on November 20 and is seeking $100 million. The pop star has been accused of breach of contract and fiduciary duty.
"A lawyer for Shakira's ex-boyfriend Antonio de La Rua says the pop superstar didn't leave his client any other option but to file a New York lawsuit to demand she pay him $100 million in compensation for managing her career," the Associated Press reported. "William T. Reid IV [the plaintiff's lawyer] says de la Rua tried to talk to Shakira about what he's owed but the Colombian singer refused."
The agreement allegedly stated that Shakira will give part of her profits from music and business ventures while receiving "business and marketing skills, knowledge and expertise" from de la Rua in exchange.
However, one of the biggest problems that the plaintiff may encounter in his lawsuit is the lack of documented proof, as the duo only had an oral agreement. Nonetheless, de la Rua claims that without his persuasion, Shakira would never have recorded the hit single "Hips Don't Lie."
Businesses in Arizona, including entertainment companies representing singers and celebrities, will need to make sure that all of their transactions, mergers, acquisitions and other business dealings are set down in stone and that every agreement has a documented and signed contract behind each decision. Otherwise, a lawsuit may ensue.
Business attorneys in Phoenix help their clients ensure that every contract benefits their company by employing various negotiation tactics.
