A former office manager for one dentist office has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the business, claiming that she was fired because she was unwilling to take part in illegal billing practices, according to a press release issued by the Kendall Law Group.
The plaintiff, Shelley Hamnet, worked for Premier Family Dentistry in Plano, Texas between February and October of 2012, but was allegedly fired for showing concern for improper dental billing processes. Hamnet has 19 years of experience in the dental billing sector. Attorney Matt Scott of the Kendall Law Group will be representing Hamnet in court.
According to the plaintiff, the dentist office began receiving documents from insurers claiming the the dental procedures that the doctor undertook were not needed for patients and not supported by the necessary information to uphold the financial reimbursement for the facility.
More than 40 percent of the patients who use Premier Family Dentistry are on Medicaid and Hamnett alleged that the billing records showed serious inconsistencies. For instance, sometimes insurers were billed for more expensive materials than were actually used, procedures that were never performed or took less time than reported.
"Shelly refused to be part of Dr. Walia's scheme to defraud insurers, particularly those that are funded by taxpayers," Attorney Matt Scott said in the press release. "She was fired for speaking up, and that's not only immoral, it's illegal."
Arizona-based businesses that find themselves in the midst of a wrongful termination lawsuit may need to speak with Phoenix business attorneys who can offer mediation and arbitration procedures to ensure that the two parties' disputes are resolved. To prevent employment-related cases from tarnishing one's company, business owners are advised to ensure that all work processes follow legal protocols.
