Student athletes on the track team in California's Mt. San Antonio College have accused their coach of sexual harassment, according to the Associated Press. Seven student-athletes filed a lawsuit against former assistant coach Carlos Moore, alleging that the man has harassed them for more than a year.
The women have claimed that the former coach inappropriately touched them, sent improper text messages and forced them to stay after hours against their will. A spokesperson for the college declined to comment on the court case.
The lawsuit also accused other administrators and coaches of not taking proper action against the alleged harassment and instead barring them from taking part in track events.
'Textual harassment' policies becoming vital for businesses
When it comes to sexual harassment, many businesses will also need to develop mobile phone policies to ensure inappropriate texts are not sent to employees. An article from Business Management Daily mentioned that companies need to ensure their management and staff are advised on proper text messaging protocols.
There have been a number of "textual harassment" claims filed in recent years, as evidenced by the student athletes. Businesses need to be aware that some employees may feel a certain message is not okay to send. More importantly, certain states have included the use of cellular phones in sexual harassment laws and Arizona companies can speak with Phoenix business lawyers to learn what to include in their cell phone policy.
In fact, the Arizona State Legislature website stated that sexual harassment is defined as: "Anonymously or otherwise contacts, communicates or causes a communication with another person by verbal, electronic, mechanical, telegraphic, telephonic or written means in a manner that harasses."
Along with this definition, there are a number of other regulations that go along with these type of lawsuits in Arizona. Local companies that need litigation help or a better understanding of an appropriate smartphone text messaging policy should contact a Phoenix business attorney.
