As previously reported in this blog, patent infringement and the intellectual property law play a strong role in business-related court cases. Companies need to be careful when it comes to designing their products or services to avoid accidentally infringing on a patent.
Before developing or manufacturing items for retail, it is a good idea to research previous patents on any similar industry products. For more information on intellectual property law, businesses in Arizona are advised to speak with Phoenix business attorneys.
Verizon is one such company that was accused of patent infringement, according to the Associated Press. However, the company has made a settlement with Tivo Inc. and will pay $250.4 million to license digital video recording technology from the television and Web entertainment firm.
The patented technology allows consumers to record television shows and watch them whenever they choose, and includes the ability to skip over commercials. The settlement brought Tivo's stock up by 38 cents, a total increase of 4 percent. Verizon also rose slightly, at four cents per share.
This is the third time that Tivo was able to come to a settlement regarding its patented DVR technology, which shows that the future of the company will likely remain strong when it comes to cases regarding patent infringement. Tivo is also looking to go to trial against Google's Motorola subsidiary and Cisco Systems in the next year regarding the same patented technology, according to the source.
"TiVo Inc. says the settlement with Verizon Communications Inc. includes an initial cash payment of $100 million and quarterly payments totaling $150.4 million through July 2018," the news source stated in another article. "Verizon will also pay monthly license fees through July 2018 for each Verizon DVR subscriber above a certain level."
Businesses in Arizona that have been accused of patent infringement or find their own products infringed upon should contact a Phoenix business law attorney.
