Lawyers who won tobacco lawsuits are targeting the food industry

Food manufacturers may have to watch out, as The New York Times reported that lawyers who targeted Big Tobacco in the past are coming after the food industry, accusing a number of companies of causing health problems to their consumers. Nutrition producers located in Arizona may need to consult a lawyer in Phoenix to protect their company.
ConAgra Foods, PepsiCo, Heinz, General Mills and Chobani are just some of the businesses that have had suits filed against them. The plaintiffs allege that the manufacturers have wrongly labeled food ingredients and violated federal regulations.
"It's a crime – and that makes it a crime to sell it," Don Barrett, a Mississippi lawyer that sued Big Tobacco in the past, told the news source. "That means these products should be taken off the shelves."
The lawyers are even asking a federal court in California to stop the selling of certain products, such as Hunt's canned tomatoes and Pam cooking spray. The American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) reported that the food manufacturers feel that the lawsuits are "frivolous." Also, many of the suits are being filed in California, where consumer protection laws generally favor plaintiffs and settlements are likely to be high.
Dr. Gilbert Ross, a representative of ACSH, said that the comparison between tobacco and food products developed in the United States is not valid. Nonetheless, others claim that the food industry's use of vague terms like "healthy" and "natural" have opened them up for these type of lawsuits.
Arizona food manufacturers and other businesses in need of litigation support would be wise to consult Phoenix business lawyers who have experience running a company.
