Some business owners may find themselves accused of polluting a town, state or even an entire country. At times, an unfortunate disaster may occur and damage may lead to lawsuits. For instance, an oil spill could bring a litigation to any region. In such cases, speaking to a business attorney at Phoenix law offices could prove beneficial.
The Associated Press discussed on August 13 one particular lawsuit that was aimed at a steel mill in 1998. The mill, Georgetown Steel, allegedly caused a large amount of pollution in Georgetown, South Carolina. One resident – Shirley Carter – was left with a permanent red color on her house that she has been unable to remove.
An interesting aspect of the lawsuit is that presidential nominee Mitt Romney owned the company – Bain Capital – that was in charge of Georgetown Steel. The town's residents sought millions of dollars in cleanup costs and state officials did determine that the steel mill was mostly at fault for the damage caused to the region.
The lawsuit went through the litigation process for ten years. Around the time the steel mill went bankrupt, it also settled with the plaintiffs. Bain Capital still received more than $30 million in returns on its Georgetown Steel investment, but plaintiffs like Carter only received $800 in the settlement.
"That wasn't even enough to paint the house," Carter told the news source.
While some Obama supporters feel that this lawsuit proves the character of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, the Huffington Post reported that the Obama administration has been accused of attacking Romney unfairly. A spokesperson for the Romney campaign said that these advertising ploys are a way for President Obama to hide "the administration’s deplorable economic record."
Since the steel mill litigation went on for ten years and the company was left bankrupt, business owners in Arizona may want to partner with Phoenix business law attorneys to ensure their company does not end up in a similar situation.
