Today, businesses in the United States are required to provide equality to people of all religions, races, genders, ages, national origin, physical disability or sexual orientation. Employers in Arizona that have been accused of not meeting this requirement may need to consult a Phoenix business attorney.
However, in Illinois, marriage equality was not guaranteed for 25 gay and lesbian couples who filed lawsuits after they were denied marriage licenses in Cook County. The suits claimed that the state violated its constitution when it banned gay marriage. Specifically, the lawsuits allege that the clerk denied the couples due process and equal protection under the law.
Last week, Cook County Judge Moshe Jacobius combined two lawsuits aimed at countering the gay marriage ban, according to the Chicago Tribune. The two lawsuits were filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois as well as Lambda Legal, an organization supporting the rights of homosexuals. The next hearing for these plaintiffs has not yet been scheduled.
The Cook County state attorney and the Illinois attorney general both support providing marriage equality for homosexual couples and concur that the ban is unconstitutional. Attorney General Anita Alverez argued in court in favor of uplifting the gay marriage ban and Cook County Clerk David Orr also supported the move.
"As Cook County State’s Attorney, Alvarez represents Orr in court. She admitted in legal filings Thursday that Orr, by enforcing a state law prohibiting gay marriage, is violating the equal-protection clause in the state constitution," The Chicago Sun-Times reported.
With the landscape of guaranteed rights transforming, many Arizona business owners may need business law help from a Phoenix business attorney with experience in running a company.
