Businesses have a duty to their consumers, employees and community to provide fair and equal treatment. Anything less will often crop up in a dispute. Racial discrimination, in particular, is an illegal practice that will likely be pursued vigorously in the courts. A Phoenix business law attorney will work with a company to make sure its reputation is not sullied in such a case.
In Arizona, the Maricopa County Sheriff's office is being sued by the U.S. Justice Department for racial discrimination within their community. Sheriff Joseph Arpaio has been accused of treating Latino residents of Maricopa County unjustly.
According to the Bloomberg BusinessWeek, the complaint was filed in Phoenix and it alleges that the sheriff's office did not provide constitutional protections to Latino prisoners. This county has been accused of sending Latino residents to prison for baseless reasons and groundless civil lawsuits. The U.S. Justice Department claims that the sheriff's office has taken part in unlawful stops and arrests and failed to provide police protection for the Latino community.
Arpaio, who has served as sheriff for 20 years, claims that the Obama administration has pursued this case because it is an election year and President Barack Obama is seeking votes from the Latino community.
"People who have lived here and seen those injustices gone by without addressing, for people who have felt victimized by him [Arpaio], people like that are really welcoming any government investigation of what is happening here," Anna O’Leary, an assistant professor in the Mexican-American Studies Department at the University of Arizona, told the news source.
In Arizona, business owners that are in the middle of discrimination disputes should seek the help of a Phoenix business lawyer to better protect their company.
