KFC employee won wrongful termination case

Sarai Vargas, a former employee of KFC, filed a lawsuit against Chick Inc. – a company that operates several KFC restaurants – due to illegal employment practices and was able to obtain $70,000 in court, according to the Statesman Journal.

Vargas had claimed that she was wrongfully terminated after accidentally burning her hand while on the job. Vargas was hired by the chain restaurant back in 2007, but claimed discrimination went on when she injured herself and attempted to file for her rightful compensation.

After grease splattered on her arm while she was pulling a chicken out of a fryer, Vargas – who was wearing protective gloves – was left with second-degree burns, her lawyer said. While her doctor treated her wound and cleared her to work, she was not allowed to be around a heated environment and needed to modify her schedule to light work.

However, KFC managers allegedly kept her working near high heat, which caused her wound to blister. Under her doctor's instruction, Vargas told her employer she could not return to work until her injury healed. After this undertaking, she was fired two days later. Following a four-day trial, jurors unanimously found in favor of Vargas.

Another company that owns a KFC chain in California – Mendota Restaurants, Inc. – was implicated in a lawsuit related to sexual harassment, according to the Associated Press.

"The sexual harassment in this case is more than egregious. It not only includes sexual assault, but in many instances the victims were teenagers. This combination is sexual harassment at its worst and it is a clear violation of federal discrimination law," John Hendrickson, the Regional Attorney of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's Chicago District Office, said in a press release.

Business owners in Arizona will need to ensure that all of their employees are being treated fairly according to both federal and state laws. When hiring managers, it is vital to keep track of their proceedings with all staff members at a facility. If an employee dispute does occur, however, contacting Phoenix business attorneys is advised.
