Apple sued for allegedly infringing on patent related to iPhone headphones

Apple has been embroiled in numerous patent lawsuits over the last year with Samsung and the intellectual property cases keep piling on the iPhone maker. The company Intelligent Smart Phones Concepts filed a lawsuit against Apple for a $3 million patent infringement case, claiming that it has infringed upon their right of including headphones with its iPhones, according to CNET.

The lawsuit was filed in a district court in California and the patent in question includes the ability to "receive at least telephone audio signals from the phone, and to provide audio signals to the phone."

ISPC seeks $3 million in lost revenue and royalties and a potential injunction that will prohibit Apple from infringing upon this particular patent in the future. The source goes on to say that the company suing Apple is most likely created to extract licensing fees from other businesses instead of making its own products.

Patent infringement lawsuits are currently rising and businesses should be careful to limit their exposure to a potential lawsuit regarding intellectual property. In 2011, U.S. companies spent $29 billion on patent infringement cases.

"Innovation continues at an absolutely breakneck pace. In a system like ours in which innovation is happening faster than people can keep up, it cannot be said that the patent system is broken," David Kappos, the head of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, said in defense of patent regulations at the Center for American Progress conference.
