Chevron fire led thousands to seek medical care

As previously reported by this blog, businesses need to ensure that they are not causing harm to their clients or consumers. For instance, some doctors have found themselves in the midst of a medical malpractice lawsuit while others, like the Georgetown Steel company, have been accused of polluting an entire town. Chevron is another example, as a fire at this place of business caused thousands of individuals to seek medical services. Phoenix business law attorneys can help companies defend their business by providing counsel services regarding the claims.

Allegedly, Chevron did not ensure certain safety procedures to keep its customers secure. Nearly 6,000 plaintiffs have filed lawsuits against the business due to a fire in a refinery in Richmond, according to online publication Seeking Alpha. A gas leak was likely to have caused the fire and a corroded pipe maybe the culprit of the leak. Plaintiffs allege that the pipe should have been replaced last year during maintenance since most of the surrounding plumbing was fixed.

The fire caused thousands of people to seek medical attention for several different reasons. Some suffered from respiratory distress and damage while others sought healthcare services because of a possible anxiety disorder. The company may have to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to handle these litigation proceedings or to possibly settle with the plaintiffs.

Besides punitive and compensatory damages, the lawsuits seek significant safety upgrades for the company along with the installation of community alert systems.

"When we receive lawsuits, we will review each case based on the merits of their claim and handle as appropriate through the legal process," Chevron spokeswoman Melissa Ritchie wrote in an email to Mercury News.

Arizona businesses facing or concerned about the prospect of claims similar to those arising from the Chevron fire may retain a Phoenix business law firm to provide advice and counsel and to defend and negotiate the claims.
