Two African-American men claim racial discrimination is prevalent in “The Bachelor”

As any business attorney knows, companies and organizations need to pay special attention to fair practices, especially when hiring individuals. Fair and equal treatment of employees as well as consumers is vital to keeping a company growing and prospering. Racial discrimination is the last thing a business would want to be accused of.

However, this exact scenario took place in the U.S. District Court in April, when two individuals filed a class action lawsuit against ABC and several companies in charge of production of "The Bachelorette" and "The Bachelor" for preventing people of color from having lead roles on this show.

Over the past 23 seasons, ABC has not cast an African-American in the TV show's lead role, according to CNN Entertainment. The complaint states that ABC has only used white applicants on the show due to "the calculation that minorities in lead roles and interracial dating [are] unappealing to the shows’ audiences…a conscious attempt to minimize the risk of alienating their majority-white viewership and the advertisers targeting that viewership."

Nathaniel Claybrooks and Christopher Johnson are the two African-American men from Nashville who are suing ABC for racial discrimination. In 2011, Claybrooks and Johnson applied to be on the show, but were allegedly denied the standard application procedures. Johnson's application was taken by a particular employee who, allegedly, did not take the applications of white contestants.

Claybrooks claims that his casting call was much shorter than white applicants and he was not given the same amount of consideration. While the two men were well-qualified to become the next Bachelor, the complaint alleges that these men were not given the same opportunity due to the color of their skin.

In Phoenix, small business attorneys can help companies and individuals steer through the complicated litigation of a racial discrimination lawsuit.
